  • Hi i’m colin power the climbing category director black diamond and this is our new vision harness this is the lightest. Weight full functioning harness on the market 224 grams designed really for alpine climbing for gear loops low-profile gear loops for. Ice buffer slots a super thin. Low-profile belay loop fixed legs it’s super packable and really lightweight. Like i said 224 grams so having a. Lightweight harness is one thing but having it really packable is another so it takes up less space in your pack not exactly on the comfortable side of the. Scale though a lot of the guys have been wearing this thing sport climbing and it’s like totally fine really really minimalistic 149 95 available in january. Of 2018. Pretty sick it’s pretty sick what we did. With this was we took our kinetic core construction from our zeno center chaos. And our ethos this is really the guts of that we stripped all the shell and everything off and left the the bare bones basically the skeleton so this is. Vector and fiber super strong doesn’t absorb water really packable really lightweight made the width balance. Between comfort and pack ability way more comfortable than you would think but it’s alpine rig it’s designed for alpine climbing no adjustment on the leg loops you know the only adjustment is the waist belt to get it on and off and this belay loop is super cool it’s. Basically one strand of super high-tech. Fiber that’s wrapped around like a doughnut and then wrapped in this casing. So it’s not like that most belay loops are a piece of webbing that’s folded into looping and bar tack so that’s how we could get this to be so strong and so small and it’s way way way over built we. Could even make it smaller and it would still meet all the requirements but it would get to the point you’d be freaked out we actually played with the diameter. Of this tubing a lot because our other. Have thicker but then it’s it’s not as. Packable we found this to be a good balance between functionality and pack ability if you put nothing on it then it’s really hard especially with gloves and jackets and stuff in packs some ski mountaineer is gonna wear this you go to the tetons you want a real harness that’s really light in packs well 224 grams that’s insane it’s only 5 grams i. Think heavier than the kawar which i would classify as not a full functioning harness you know yes you can wrap it and. Stuff like that but you know it’s got the diaper legs and no gear loop you know that kind of thing so this is like got everything you need on it called the. Vision because we thought that these climbers that are looking at these crazy north faces in the mountains like they have the vision to link up these ice smears and stuff this is the kind of harness that they want to wear sadly we. Made it for kyle dempster that’s who we made it for and he had our first prototype when we lost him last fall you. Know we made it for those guys for kyle haydon kennedy urban novak you know. Marko appraisal like these kind of dudes you know that are really pushing it but of course anyone can use it for anything they want but we really wanted to make it for those kind of guys that are pushing the limits in the mountains.

  • What. So kitty is rocking some new trekking. Poles that i got the black diamond. Distance flz the carbon fiber how do you. Like them so far. Superlight. Hey what’s up guys devin here with back country exposure we’re going to talk about trekking poles today but specifically the distance carbon flz. Poles from black diamond as I’ve gotten. Older i have really become to enjoy. Trekking poles as a great option to help. Me hike further and more comfortable in. The back country so let’s go ahead and talk about these carbon flz distance. Poles from black diamond because these. Are easily the most expensive pole that. I have ever owned as far as trekking poles are concerned now I’ve used a lot of different trekking poles over the years I’ve had black diamond poles I’ve had two sets of. Black diamond poles actually but not as. Expensive as these are i have they’re. Like trail series that are an aluminum pole which is a three-piece extendable. Pole where this is like their z. Breakdown type thing which I’ll show you. Here in a second and then I’ve used poles from perea outdoor products I’ve used poles from wild horn outfitters. Mountain smith’s a lot of different brands and essentially like trekking. Poles are all basically the same if you. Really think about it but there are certain aspects to a trekking pole that. Make them more comfortable or super. Lightweight and in this case this is a. Full carbon pole so what you’re looking. At is basically the entire shaft of the. Pole is carbon fiber this pole set comes. In at just under a pound total which is. Crazy lightweight and that’s something that i really like about these poles is I’ve been using them for the past several months they’re just so light and so easy to use that they. Make traveling with them really easy one. Of the things that i don’t necessarily like about this pole though is the fact that it is that like z shape breakdown. Which I’ll go ahead and show you right now let me lower this down push this button in so. Essentially the pole breaks down in this. Since so it makes it a really small. Package to be able to put in your backpack and such but if I’m using this. For a tarp type situation where i am. Setting up a shelter using trekking. Poles then i don’t have as much versatility in being able to drop one. End of the tarp by lowering the length. Or shortening the length of the pole like i can with those 3-piece poles like. The wild horn outfitters ones or like. The other black diamond trail series. That i have so something to think about when you are considering but if you’re using a pole like this it’s super lightweight to just hike fast really quick distances which essentially this. Distance series from black diamond is. Meant more for that type of setting but. Such a lightweight pole that it’s nice to have on the trail for any type of. Activity that you’re doing now this does. Have this classic black diamond flick. Lock system to it so if i push that open. Then I’m able to extend this to the different lengths that i have so this pole happens to be the 105 to the 120. Centimeter they do have a shorter one. Then this and then also a longer one than this looking at the top of the pole you’ve got a molded evie a foam and i do. Really like that they put these cutouts. Into the foam so this makes it so it breathes really well on your. Hand so that you’ve got not sweaty hands. Every time that you are hiking but let. Me explain one thing that i do not like about this pole in particular I’m not a. Huge fan of black diamonds system right here where they’ve got this. Piece of cordage around through the. Inside of the pole now base typically what this does is when i stick. My hand through it allows for a little bit better articulation but i. Notice that right here on the top of my. Hand or where my thumb wraps around you i kind of digs in and because this. Is sewn right here it could just be how. I have it set right now but the fact that like that is right on where my hand. Rubs and where I’m trying to push down it does cause a little bit of pain and. Discomfort right on my hand so if i. Was using the pole just like this let’s. See if i came down in this manner which is not the recommended way of using. A trekking pole then it would be more comfortable but coming up through and utilizing the strap around your wrist to. Effectively put the weight on the pole. This type of sit setup with this strap. Is not ideal i do like how I’ve seen on. A bunch of other poles even like leki poles and the mountain smith wands lots. Of different brands this strap will. Attach onto the inside and kind of come. Over top of itself instead of wrapping around a piece of cordage in for a pole that’s almost $200 in price that is. Something that can be kind of frustrating so if we take a look on the bottom end of the pole they do have a. Carbide tip on here and you have the. Option as well with what comes with the pole to be able to switch out this tip to just like kind of standard rubber. Tip but the carbide tip is pretty. Standard for any kind of trekking pole and then with the fact that they break. Down into such a small package is a really cool thing so I’m going to show you this one more time you guys are probably familiar with this and other types of poles but black diamond basically are the brand that. Revolutionized what trekking poles are. Capable of doing and really good designs. The flick lock is one of their. Cool things so really small package and. Then to extend it and set it up you. Basically drop those together and then. Slide this top tube down and that gives. You your rigid pull so again a full. Carbon fiber pull really lightweight the. Pair is just under a pound like i mentioned before i am a little concerned about how this button is gonna hold up. Over time against the carbon fiber but. It should be okay the other carbon fiber pulls that i had been from fox tele and. That pole actually ended up breaking. Which was pretty unfortunate but there’s. A good amount of flex in there, but they are super strong and have a lot of like. Trust in them and they’re just a great. Pole in general I’m rambling at this. Point but should somebody spend a. A Hundred and eighty dollars on this pole that’s totally up to you could get away with other types of. Carbon poles, but they are super lightweight and i think that black diamond really has a great product here well guys so that is the carbon flz. Distance poles from black diamond these. Things are awesome if you want to spend a hundred and eighty dollars on a set of trekking poles definitely check these out obviously there are other options out there but i think this is a great one to look at so thank you so much for watching guys I’m gonna head back out on the trail and get on hiking and as. Always please subscribe to the channel i. Hope you guys have an awesome day.

These are the women’s black diamond distance flz poles, and they’ve been a favorite among trail runners and lightweight enthusiasts for years they. Travel easily with you because of the foldable design they’re aluminum so. They’ll last a long time and the rapid deployment system means setup is fast and folding them back down as a breeze. The z poles get their name because they. Fold down into a z pattern that’s perfect for storing on your pack if you encounter a steep incline or for packing. Down into your travel luggage they fold. Down smaller than traditional trekking. Poles and they save weight because less material is used in each chef section. Setting them up is easy because a black diamonds rapid deployment system the. Internal cord connects all sections. Together and once it’s tensioned the poles are stable just grab the grip and. The first shaft section and then pull. Then away from each other the pole snaps. Into place with the slide lock here you. Will see a locked and an unlocked icon. To fold them down just pull up on the. Slide lock with one hand and push the. First section back towards the grip this. Action loosens the internal cord so you. Can fold down all the sections you can. Set these up on the run because of the speed cone design which guides the. Sections into place at each joint the fl. In the name stands for flick lock this external lock allows you to adjust the. Poles for the perfect fit the grip is. Made of a va foam i like foam grips because they’re lightweight, and they. Wick in the summer the top is rounded so you can palm it going downhill and for. Steep ascents the grip is extended so. You can grasp a lower spot without having to stop and make a height adjustment the lightweight straps adjust to your hand with the hook and loop closure now. Down at the bottom black diamond gives you versatility with the interchangeable tips you get a carbide tip and a non scarring. Rubber on the rubber tech tips are. Installed onto the poles in manufacturing but for most dirt trails. And in snow or ice i would use the carbide tips for the best traction the. Small attached basket here gives flotation in mud and has a little cutout. To secure the poles when they’re folded down there’s a little knot above the. Basket where you can attach zee pole snow baskets for use in winter those are. Sold separately they’re versatile for. Are perfect for ultralight thru-hikers adventure racers or anyone looking for a simple streamlined and pack able trekking. Pole they’ll give you the best of both worlds by providing a collapsible. Compact construction while also being adjustable and not fixed in length let’s. Take a closer look the distance carbon. Flz poles are made up of completely. Carbon shaft sections which lets them. Come in at an incredibly low weight. Among the three options the heaviest comes in just around 13 ounces for the. Pair and has a collapsed length of less. Then 16 inches he’s almost redefined light and fast in. Terms of trekking poles black diamond has beefed up these poles in some sections to address possible durability concerns each joint support has added. Reinforcement which gives it improved stiffness and overall durability they’ve. Also built up the locking mechanism. Section to offer increased durability i also really like how the black diamond. Pulls a deploy the z poles have this. Rapid deployment system based off of their tried-and-true avalanche probes which is super convenient for those of us who don’t really stop once we hit the. Trail these poles have a Kevlar concealed inner cord which connects to these speed cones basically you can just grab the top shaft section and pull it. Away from the handle and the poles will automatically align and marry up once you hear the click from the push button under the handle you know they’re good to go once the main shaft sections are. Aligned you’ve got a simple flick lock mechanism which gives you a comfortable adjustment range this is great for those. Folks who prefer a length that comes between a fixed length option you still. Get the lightweight but can tailor the poles for your preferences rather than. Being stuck at the bottom you’ve got a neat little tip design the poles come standard with a non scarring rubber tech. Tip but they also include a separate. Carbide tip which I’ve installed here the tip can easily be threaded on there for harder bite on trail surfaces along with. That you get a small performance basket with a little cutout that cutout is designed so that the poles can stay clipped together when they are collapsed. It’s great for keeping things from bouncing around awkwardly when the poles are strapped to your running pack or being stored away last but not least the. Grip at the top is made with evie a foam. And has some nice comfort features it has a mini extension so you can change and adjust your grip depending on the terrain you’re facing there’s a super light strap to take off some of that wrist stress and that strap can be. Adjusted with this velcro depending on your size or fit preference the evie a handle also has some cutaways which shed. Weight adds some texture and ergonomics to the overall structure this also beefs. Up the moisture management properties of. That soft foam grip overall the black. Diamond distance carbon flz is a pretty. Just don’t grab on Tennessee not to want. To just fold it these are the black. Diamond ultra distance hiking poles. What’s left of one of them and that’s it. And the other one and i just managed to break this one hiking yesterday and i never imagined that I’d be able to do it this is the. Break that happened while i was hiking well first of all let me show you how they work, so they’re really a nifty little design little silver button you push here and that pulls collapse partway up into the. Handle and then you can open these two gaps, and they turn into one third there. Length and they’re extremely light because they’re carbon fiber to do, and so they’re really easy to use and the. Only thing you can’t do with these and with a metal poles you can adjust the lengths but after a while you get used to that and then lightweight makes it super easy to move them around quick and very low fatiguing nice comfortable grip. Handles i would love these poles use them for four five years ago yesterday for five years long time. Right here breeze that’s why it broke. Right there and that’s because there’s a hole for the button otherwise it’s a continuous tube so when you put enough stress on it won’t bend just snap and. Then it’s dead so i broke it here just. In order to be able to fold it up and put it on my backpack and carry it out but it’s just a word to the wise that. These carbon-fiber poles as great as they are they have limitations and i. Guess maybe I’ll go back to metal because if you fall down and this happens this pole is completely worthless and you will hike out without. It but don’t use it they’re super light right, but they’re super light yeah it’s a trade-off between what you want you know how much strength you need and whether how important it is that it never break versus the ease of use of. What’s the brand of this again black dynamic diamond okay reputable mate did. They have a model number on that particular one and it’s just called the ultra distance so to distance Agricola ultra distance equal pull this happens to be a 130 centimeter length difference. So it’s all right with your fiber. Hiking poles your hand is safe but the pole is broken i gotta get some new. Poles cool see out there. So it looks like okay. Alright guys so that was the black diamonds ultra distance poll and this. Thing is super lightweight and my dad mentioned it but this is crazy lightweight like you would even imagine how easy this thing is to move maneuver around he was just saying how when you’re hiking you can just go really quick with it and hold yourself up super. Easy so this is a great hiking pole just be careful when you’re falling and hey. You always know i always take the necessary precautions if you feel like you’re gonna fall and hurt yourself put the pool in the way and break the pole but you know these things are not. Indestructible but they are amazing, or they’re made for and that is for super lightweight hiking assistance so click. The link in the description I’ll give you guys a link to go buy the pole and if you use that link go support my channel I’ll bring you cooler videos and hit me up maybe we’ll go hiking some see you guys. You.

Higher so you can do vo2max productions. Here with a trekking pole review. Today we’re going to talk about black diamond distance carbon z trekking poles. And these are made out of carbon fiber they’re super lightweight they come in four different sized versions depending on your height and these are my first. Career trekking poles I’ll admit I’m not a super experienced trekking pole type of guy but man these are light um sandy. Had i had some other trekking poles at sandy was using that were static, and they didn’t fold up into thirds like these do, and they were a little heavier. But they’re so great poles for hiking around these are great for running if. You’re doing fast packing long-distance pole maybe like a utmb 100 type of race. Or one of those extreme vertic aureus is. Mountain races nolan’s 14 hard rock whatever uh this is the boy i heard to. Get and man it is great carbon fiber. Construction again and this nice soft. Eda handle um i think cv a foam double check on. That and i got let’s see i got her for. Sammy’s whoa she’s coming back from Achilles tendon surgery, and she’s been able to hike around but the poles really. Allow her to hike up in the mountains. And kind of take that strain that pressure off the legs because you can engage the arms especially on steep. Slopes or if you’re trying to balance yourself on rocky technical terrain now the handy thing about these is that. They fold up they fold up in thirds and you can stow them very easily again 9. Ounces amazing they got these nice rubber tips on the end it’s probably. What they dig in real durable we’ve been. Testing them out in the san juans we’re. Taking them to france i may or may not use them for utmb but that’s to be. Decided still I’m going to trainer them out in the swiss alps so what i like is. That they store really well oh i should. Also mention they have this nice lightweight wrist strap that you see. Zhilie adjust and then you know slip it on and off so allows you to really not lose. Your poles i guess but a great little addition they’re super lightweight nice. And breathable everything you want in a. High-performance trekking pole so another product plug here sponsor plug actually this is the ultimate direction groove system mono system velcro belt. The mother mono attachment trekking poles fit in the roped off sections up. Front here for easy access not going to drop them the way I’d probably prefer to. Carry them for a race or a fast fk t. Type effort so that’s it for the product. Review of the carbon z distance trekking. Poles from black diamond again real lightweight 9 ounce range type of. Trekking pole collapses into thirds real. Compact ideal for really fast efforts. Ultra efforts in the mountains or you. No fast packing or utmb style racing. Hero racing sky racing things like that. So real versatile pole great and compact. To carry great to use I’m still getting. The hang of trekking poles but i could see it as being a huge benefit for a lot of people so that’s my review on the. Black diamond product stay tuned for some more product reviews from this. Channel you can subscribe for more as well as training for utmb and more. Adventure videos to come and some speeds go 50 k footage from last weekend thanks for watching guys hope your summer training racing is going well and stay tuned for more via to max productions. You.

Hi I’m tom santoro and I’m a design engineer at black diamond equipment. I’m going to show you the feature on the distance carbon flz. We have a wide range of poles designed for a variety of terrain and price points. No matter where your adventures take you. To easily understand our pole names fl stands for flick lock. Z stands for z pole and a are for accessory ready. We offer both aluminum shafts for the most durability and carbon shafts for the lightest weight. When you get your trekking poles they will be collapsed in a z configuration. Instructions are located on the poles. To extend your z poles pull down on the slider shaft until you hear the pin click. On models with flick lock adjust to your desired length. a good starting point is to have a 90 degree angle in your elbow. All of our flick locks come preset however it is easy to adjust the tightness to your desired level. By using a standard screwdriver. Make sure the flick lock is in the open position when adjusting. To adjust your z pull straps use the velcro adjusters. Each pole is labeled with an r or an l. A recommended strap use is entering up from the bottom. And then grip down onto the pole. this will allow the strap to lay flat under your palm for the most comfortable grip. All z poles feature a lightweight eba foam grip. On our distance carbon ar model there’s a soft touch rubber grip top. That is also accessory ready. For this model the trekking poles can also serve as tent poles for our distance tent. All of our z poles come with one-piece lightweight baskets. With a rubber tech tip installed. The tip is also compatible with our z pole snow basket. Which is sold separately. To install the snow basket align the circle to the key way and push on until you hear loud snap. To remove apply force to pop off the snow basket. To change the carbide tech tip use a pair of pliers to twist it off. To install it spins it on clockwise. Being sure to engage the wave lock three or four clicks. To collapse your z poles push the pin into the shaft. And separate the lower shaft. On poles that have our slide lock. Pull up on the sleeve and then collapse the lower shafts. Clip the basket to the slider shaft when your z poles are collapsed for the best pack ability. Over time if you notice your poles loosen. Access to pole tensioner twist clockwise to tighten and remove slack from the system. Be sure to check out blackdiamondequipment.com. For latest information on our trekking poles, their feature sets and our recommended uses.

Designed with the ounce counting backpacker and trail runner in mind the. Black diamond distance flz poles are the. Perfect option when you want to move fast and light in the back country take a. Look at all the features that makes this pole so special the first thing that. Stands out to me without these poles is. The compact size so these are a. Collapsible pole meaning that the. Sections here don’t telescope down into one another they collapse down into that. Z pattern that gives them their name the. Fl in the naming stands for the flick. Locks so these are an adjustable pole. You’ve got black diamond flick locks here that are going to allow you to adjust the pole depending on what size. You have and we’ll talk about that later. But the first thing to do to set up the. Poles you’ve got a couple of different. Sections here in the pole you have your three shaft sections that have a central. Cord that run through those shaft sections these remind me of tent poles. In the way that they go into one another. So the first thing to do is just set those sections up you’ve got two. Sections at the top of this pole one of. Them is the piece that tensions the cord. On the inside so what you want to do is. Find the section underneath of this. Little grey part of the bottom of the. Top section of the pole and you want to pull those sections apart once you pull. Then apart far enough you’ll see a. Little blue line and a button that’s going to expose itself you’ll hear a. Positive click and then it’ll be set up. And that means that the cord on the inside is tensioned all the way and you. Have a very secure pole so i opened that. Up and you can see the button there. Exposed itself and from here you can. Adjust the pole so this top section of the poll is separate from. There you can adjust it up and down i have 125 centimeter poles in my hand. Here and they’re going to adjust from 105 centimeters all the way up to 125 so. This is a great option for someone who. Either doesn’t want fixed-length pose or. Knows that they’re going to adjust their poles in different ways this is perfect. For if you’re hiking on uneven terrain and you want to make quick adjustments or if your someone that is in between sizes on the fixed length poles and you. Really need to dial in that fit the. Black diamond flick locks couldn’t be any easier to use you just flick it open. With your thumb adjust it easily up and. Down and then flick it closed it doesn’t. Take a lot of force to open and close this lock but once the lever is closed. It is an extremely secure and tight seal. And you’re not gonna have to worry about your pole going anywhere so really great. Locks there, and they’re pretty lightweight as well so that keep the weight down for this ultra light pole. Moving up to the grips you have black. Diamonds foam grips these are non-slip grips so you have some texturing here in the top the thing. I really like about foam grips is in. Warmer weather if your hands are perspiring the foam works away sweat. Really well you can also use them in colder temperatures you don’t feel cold through the foam grips, and they as well. Work really well with gloves there’s. Some shaping to it and you even have a little extension below that grip so if you need to grab the pole at a lower. Spot you can and there’s a flat top to. This grip as well so you can palm the top of the pole if you need to but really easy to adjust and comfortable strap at the top is going to help take. That strain off of your wrists as you’re hiking these are aluminum poles so. You’ve got the durable of aluminum, but they’re also very lightweight so the different sizes of. This pole will weigh in at different weights, but they’re ultra lightweight. For having the feature of that locking mechanism moving down to the tip you. Have black diamonds tech tips so these. Are a little bit smaller diameter of a basket on this tip and it’s a really. Great feature that black diamond. Includes two sets of tips they include the carbide tips which give you really. Good traction on dirt and on trails on. Ice as well and they also include a. Replaceable rubber tip which is what i have on here now the rubber tip is great. On improved surfaces or harder surfaces. Where you don’t want the carbide tip to slip around and those tips are included. In a velcro strap the velcro strap that. Comes with the packaging has a small pocket in it and the extra set of tips. Are in that pocket when you want to break down the poles for that small pack. Size what i normally do is pull the two. Sections at the top apart a little bit just so i can get a thumb on that button and i can press that down then you undo. The other sections of the pole you can undo the lock as well. Make sure that’s compressed down all the way and you have your small pack size so. These are great for trail runners they’re lightweight enough that if. You’re running along and you need to throw them in your pack or something like that you can either run with them. Or put them in a pack for ounce counting. Backpackers these are great as well and with that feature of being able to adjust the pole these are a great option. For anyone who wants more stability in. The outdoors there the black diamond distance flz poles. You.

All right welcome to the first official gear review on the new channel and to. Kick it off we’re going to start with the black diamond women’s distance flz. Trekking pole so these z shaped. Collapsible trekking poles come in two sizes 95 to 110 which weigh 15 and a. Half ounces and 105 to 125 which are a. Little over a pound they also come with. Extra tips so you get the plastic tips. On them when they arrive and then a carbide tip which is in the packaging you’ll find a velcro strap around the poles when they arrive at your door so another really great feature with these poles is the grips and the wrist straps. The grips are moisture wicking and really comfortable and soft in the hand but firm enough for when you’re walking they won’t collapse on you and the wrist straps indicate right and left and have the velcro on them to tighten and loosen, so they can fit your wrist properly it’s. A feature that i have mixed reviews on until i try them out to be honest because i don’t often use the straps when i ski i go strapless and so. We’ll see how they are with hiking and. So to get these on the trail we’re going to go up to big meadows reservoir which is just below wolf creek pass, and we’ll. See how these things perform all right. So we’re on our hike on the lake big. Meadows reservoir just down the pass from wolf creek and decided to rain on. Is today but it’s still a gorgeous day a little bit of sleet a little bit of hail maybe some snow, but we have the pups. With us and our little dude. So the nice part about having these. Trekking poles they’re super lightweight which is a huge plus but the stability you get when you’re climbing uphill is huge and. Really good with it, so they’re firm their goods are in the ground and you have a nice little walk up with them it’s really nice so what i like most. About these poles is the compacted other. So the flip lock is really simple you. Flip it open you lock it tight and then there’s a button that you just press in and the poles collapse to about that big and then you simply detach and. What’s really cool is the basket simply. Clicks into itself these are nice and compact i can put them right in my pack. In the water bottle holder cuz on my pack that I’m using today there’s two bottle holders only one of them has my bottle but super compact and both fit in the holders which is really nice. You. In addition to the black diamond women’s trekking poles that I’m trying out today I’m also trying their dun wall hoodie I’m. Wearing a size medium and as you can tell it’s a fun purple color with two-tone maybe coral some of the fun. Features on this hoodie it’s it is a hoodie it has a nice comfortable hood that you can throw up if it gets windy or if you get a little chilly it’s been about 55 degrees today and so it’s a. Perfect layer for me top layer to be honest because if the wind is blowing a little bit suns going in and out and there was some rain it’s quick dry it’s 90% polyester so it dried relatively. Quickly even when the rain and sleet came through earlier this is the size. Medium it fits let’s see I’m like five 437. Pounds give or take and it fits me really well it’s really comfortable but. Substantial enough to keep me nice and warm when it you know the wind is blowing and the temperatures drop a little bit. So we just got back from our hike and i. Have to say both the black diamond trekking poles and don wall hoodie. Performed phenomenally well i was super. Comfortable in that hoodie it was quick drying as you saw in the video i went from rain and some sleet straight to. Sunshine and it wasn’t too warm it wasn’t too cold it was the perfect layer. For me to wear today and so yeah five. Stars all around for the hoodie and for the trekking poles they also performed. Great we had some downed trees some debris on the trail some good uphills and downhills and, and they worked really well again especially when having. The little guy on me some extra stability is always a plus and i did end. Up using the wrist straps and i really liked them they were adjustable and so i adjusted them to fit my wrist properly and it went really well i think I’m. Looking forward to trying out some blacker diamond gear in the future but if you like this stuff there’re some links below so you can check them out for yourself and then I’ll have some other reviews coming up some more trekking poles some really fun stuff coming up so subscribe below and thanks for checking out my first video there are some comments down there let me know what you think i tried to get in the field show you guys some in action shots. There’s some hard cuts i apologize for. That there was some barking dogs in the mix but give me your opinion let me know what you think if there are any products you want to hear more about put that down there too so thanks for stopping by and looking forward to y’all visiting again thanks.

  • Hey everybody this is Jackie from the budget-minded travelers comm and i want to take a few minutes to show you today why i love my Gregory jade 50 backpacks so much and why i would recommend it for you as your go-to travel backpack but. First of all if you haven’t watched my how to choose the right travel backpack video i recommend that you watch that one so that you can understand what we’re getting into today I’m going to be talking about the three c’s comfort capacity and convenience alright allow. Me to introduce you to my go to travel backpack the Gregory jade 50 it’s a. Women’s size small for my torso and the. Number 50 is the pack capacity in litres why is this important three reasons. Number one the fact that it’s a size. Small is not only great for fitting my torso perfectly but it’s a bonus because. Check this out oh whoa thanks okay this. Backpack is about 20 to 21 inches that. Makes it small enough to carry on which is really important to me because i prefer to carry on whenever possible the. Second reason the 50 is perfect for me is that it’s small enough so that it discourages me from over packing yet. It’s still big enough to fit everything that i need and the third reason is that. It seems to be the perfect size for any length of trip that i take i can take it. For weeks or months it always seems to be the perfect size for me and now we’ll talk about comfort look closely at the. Frame of this backpack it’s actually shaped against the curve of my back. There’s lumbar support at the bottom and there’s shoulder support at the top and. The frame never actually touches my back. So when a backpack fits right all the. Weight should be right on your hips and this should be fastened just above your hip bone so once i get all the straps at. Just the right length I’m actually really comfortable and i actually hiked machu picchu with this backpack for three days straight and i didn’t have any problems with being sore i also packed like so keep that in mind all right on the convenience it’s. Important to look at the pockets straps zippers and extra flair that the backpack has so starting at the top. There’s one right across the top here which i like for two reasons on it. Makes a convenient spot to put things that I’ll need to access a lot like sunglasses passport wallet hotel keys. There’s even a strap on the inside here. For your keys so that they’ll keep them in a convenient spot and the second. Think i like about this specific zipper is that the zipper is actually tucked in pretty close to my body so that when I’m wearing it’s harder for a thief to. Get to and if you notice right here i. Actually keep a safety pin right there on that loop and that way i can safety. Pin the loop to the strap and it creates a lock on the zipper so i wouldn’t have to worry about people trying to get into it anyway alright moving on if you open. It up you’ll see that on the inside i. Don’t know if you could see this from there, but we’ll try there’s a pocket. Right against the back here i don’t know if you can see it but it fits documents. I always put my flight reservations and important things extra stash of money right there in that pocket because it’s almost hidden and the rest of it is just a big open space I’ve actually got a pillow stuffed in there right now to show you and then on the outside the. First thing that you’ll notice is this big bulky pouch and what i love about. This is that i actually use it to put my. Shoes in and you’ll see that I’ve got some shoes in it right here this is a. Very versatile pouch for anything that’s. Bulky shaped or maybe muddy i put muddy shoes muddy clothes in here all the time. So that’s a great spot for any kind of. Shoes and then on the outside of this there’s a long vertical pouch and this. Is actually pretty big this is where i keep my flip-flops because it seems to be the perfect size pocket for a flat pair of flip-flops and then on each side there are these. Adjustable pockets right here which you could also put shoes in or water bottles. There’s a velcro if you’re not going to use it and there’s also a strap right here that you could put around the top of a water bottle or the end of a shoe to hold it in there and that’s on both. Sides of this backpack there’s also on. The very bottom besides the mud there’re some straps here. You could put something long shaped in. This so like when i take this backpacking in the summer camping that’s. Where i put my sleeping pad because it’s a long awkward shape and it doesn’t even then have to go into my backpack it just goes right on the bottom and the last. Think and probably the most important is. This side pocket right here this piece. Of magic allows me to be able to reach. At the bottom of my backpack without having to take everything out through the top every time when i need something that’s packed deep and i almost forgot. Right here on the sides of the hip straps there’s two more little pockets that are perfect for chapstick they even fit a little point-and-shoot camera and anything that you need to keep convenient with you while you’re wearing your backpack those are great pockets for that and there’s one more see that i. Didn’t talk about with this backpack and that’s cost and that’s another reason why i love this backpack i actually went. To rei to get fitted for this backpack they had a blue one in the store and once i decided the best the backpack i really wanted i went to the rei outlet and i found this one which is even more perfect for me because my favorite color is red this backpack cost me a hundred. And four dollars on the rei outlet so i was able to save a lot of money that way. So there you have it a complete introduction and review of my favourite backpack the Gregory jade 50 i hope. You’ve enjoyed this video if you have please give it a thumbs up and come on over to check out my blog and podcast at the budget-minded travelers comm for. Even greater travel tips have a great day you.

By going through what i carry and why and get this done trumped any minute all. Right welcome back guys. Let’s talk about what i liked about this pack have you several tax with. The Gregory for a day pack. I found that i can carry anything over. And above what i normally carry which is in excess and so in some people’s mind. When it comes with date hiking will. Start by showing you what i carry this. Pack is ready to measure for 24 liters. Which i found to be pretty accurate the. 24 liters is way bigger than you. Really need to day hike but it really allowed me to carry the essentials and what i mean by that is I’m kind of like. Self-preservation if i get out we get out in the back country i like to have things and be prepared for pretty much anything if i get stuck there i want to know that i can survive no matter what. Kind of conditions are there are so hey we’ll start by showing you this i carry my fire kit everywhere every time i go. On they would consist with some fire-making materials here i carry a pin or any logbooks i might. Run across on the trail they’re lighter that’s actually a butane powered jet. Lighter very reliable. And might go to item ferrocerium rod. Found very few situations that i cannot. Start a fire with a ferrocerium run they’re very effective chuckle. Atwood if you’re familiar with bush crafting type skills this is excellent fire starting material it’s a just resin impregnated pine and what. That one is and of course another blade i carry. Believe you don’t have a knife here you do at home so anyway that pretty much. Covers my fire starting kit and that’s. In the center all right next item I’ve. Got here very accessible some d all. Right here protein this is nothing more than some turkey jerky great source of. Protein and energy out there on the front of course the amount of food you. Carry is going to be dictated obviously by how far and how long you’re going to be gone water filter and bag i use a. 64-ounce sawyer bag with my little mini filter excellent piece of equipment and. Stand by got to have a knife gotta have a good blade in the woods in my opinion. And i never go now that this is a more companion robust made out of 1095. Carbon steel one of the essentials these. Knives are great they’re very inexpensive one of my favorites actually. And you guys know I’m talking about here. Gotta have toilet paper well as my cook. Pot this one happens to be a little stanley this one actually came from. Walmart comes on very good piece of. Equipment $14 and my little go-the stove. And watch a review on that stove on a youtube channel as well this has two. Nesting cups which are very thick hard plastic which are lightweight but. Virtually indestructible, so we really like these you can cook in this we make. Hot tea coffee you name it can be dusted and next. First aid kit this one happens to be. Military in nature i have pretty much. Anything in here that short of a combat. Lifesaver yet you know we can treat any basically and kind of cut up into stitches i can’t do stitches but any. Minor injuries we can pretty much cover with that’s a whole nother review in its own, so we will get into that to be also state i can always carry my you. Know lovino hammock i can’t say that our. Camping that but i do have it just in. Case i find a little too big for the. Email to be staying multiple days on the. Trail of course my atlas straps for you know cordage always carry good cordage. With me and that’s for sure. Never know when you might need an extra. Flow in case it rains or whatnot and. Along with that express ox i like to. Carry my little small nikon binoculars with me i just like watching wildlife and of course you never know when you might need to see something far away so these are great these are little ten power great for the trail and of course. Flashlights got them a little tack light here I’m. Not really sure what brandi just says j5 tactical light i think i bought it online and one of the essentials to me. And score is having a bush craft type mindset i have my little grants poor’s. Brooks mini hatchet it’s absolutely one. Of my favorite tools i can pretty much do anything that i think i could do. With a knife with this tool for a. Hatchet this is razor sharp literally will shave you clean which is with a nice tool to be fine carving with it and. Split firewood with it just almost a. Necessity to me and of course i always. Carry a thousand milliliter water bottle at minimal this is the nalgene brand and. I could look at that’s it and you can. See on the bottom of the pack this pack has lasting points on the bottom for anything you might need and i just happen to carry by a little flex like a. Chair i need a place to fit anyway. Talking about the pack itself this seems. Excessive i know to most people as far as day hiking but it is my mom said that. With this equipment i can pretty much encounter anything i have the tools i need to build a shelter if i want you i have enough food i have fire making material i have a place to sleep in the hammock if i need to so i go prepare. Water filter you know this is. How i do it this is no right or wrong way to hike it’s just my way of doing it. One thing i like about this pack is this. Gregory sack is very lightweight I’m not. Sure what the spec says or we should. Look at but the pack itself is very lightweight it’s very well-made you know 24 litres. Is big enough to carry all of this stuff. And if you’re not a inclusive type day. Hiker like i am then you could fit. Clothing you can put anything you want to and this is how i do this offer he. Comes with a mesh suspension system that. They call their free span it was very. Nice i found that on the trail it kept. My back nice and cool even when you know. Going up strenuous steep sections of the trail i found it very nice the pack was. Very comfortable it fit well oh I’m 511. I weigh about 220 I’m kind of short. Waisted myself so this particular pack. Fit me very well i believe this one here. This is the men’s. Okay i believe it’s just a one-size-fits-all in the day pack but i believe that this pack would fit the majority of you know your average guy say which that’s kind of what i am. So very nice bit i like how they have on. The waistband they have nice pockets here you can put a phone there if you. Choose anything small knife and on both. Sides which is nice also i like the top pack that pouch. Up there you know i put some of the essentials in it a lot of times i like to carry stuff that i want to get to you really quickly like my knife you know fair socks you know toilet paper is just. A small essential up there and of course. The main pack has had tons of room in. It how obvious if you can expand that you know it works very well it also is. Equipped with a hydro bladder you can. Fit a pretty significant water bladder. In here if you desire which is nice i. Particularly don’t carry them a lot of people do guys another thing i want to. Show you is here southern a select amount ors, or he carries a variety of. These packs this is another Gregory also this is a sailboat as well this one’s an. A team leader it’s a little smaller in volume same features it doesn’t have the. Expanded waist belt just because it’s. Not as you’re not going to carry in here as much weight on this type. This one is world. This is also a solo 24 men’s packed. Different color schemes the only difference about that’s actually pretty cool anyway either I’d have to say that i. Would give that Gregory packing nine out of ten and i think yes grid dating for. The money i think retail here at the store this is a 115 so good value if you. Look at other different brands you’ll find that’s very comfortable and actually maybe a little bit less expensive than some of the other brands as well same feature packed item nothing. I want to mention too is versus some of. The other packs that I’ve used as well this one has the five pouches that are. Actually big enough to fairly easily put. A thousand milliliter water ball in each side without compromising your internal. Space so i found that to be very nice as well yeah anyway this has been andy with. Mossy back outdoor adventures here at southern appalachian outdoors here picking south carolina right on main street can’t miss it combined steve marty and everybody here, and they’ll do you right i promise. Thank you talk to you later. You.

  • Hey there and welcome back to peace. Couch now as many of you aware I’m about to embark on the marathon disorder which. Is something I’ve been concentrating really heavily on for the last year or. More as well as doing lots of training. I’ve been doing so much research on the. Amount of kit going to take and I’ve been testing a lot of stuff so over the. Next couple of weeks before i depart i thought I’d share some of those learnings with you and where better. Place to start than the backpack I’m going to take which i have decided on. The ultimate direction fast pack 20 now. This is super heavy at the moment because it’s its fully weighted so I’ve been training with but i just can empty it out and show you why i like it so much so here it is and it’s naked form. And this is what i like most about it is that it’s so minimal it’s basically an expanded running desk it weighs next to nothing and this is kind of one of the big deciding factors for me because obviously I’m trying to cut down as much weight as possible 510. Grams okay now a great thing to compare. This to is the official war bag which a. Lot of people will be using mdf and in. Contrast it’s got all kinds of stuff hanging off it and most importantly the. Weight of it 900 grams that’s a pretty. Huge difference so this is nearly half the weight of the wire back which is an incredible savings but I’ve also decided. To make an even bigger saving on it there’s not much you can cut off it like the like a wild bag you can get the diseases to that and kind of trim off some weight but here it’s so minimal anyway but certainly the most notable. Savings you can make is in the back there’s a bit of padding that you can remove, and they say that this can be. Used to sit on or even to you know used. To cushion your hips when you’re lying down i found it pretty useless. I’ve actually having removed this form. The back I’ve actually found the pack more come — boo and with it out so condition this. That brings the weight of the pack down to give time a gram so i say 10 grams. Right there so although this fast pack is nearly half the weight of the wire bag actually fits way more in it and it’s down as a 20 litres bag but i think. You could probably push that out quite a lot partly because of the nature of this main compartment and how it seals its kind of like a dry bag has a velcro fastening that then rolls and then clips. In at the sides now i probably got about. 20 litres in there now but you can. Basically just not roll it down as much and sitting maybe another five litres. Into that main compartment it’s not only that you’ve also got this fat mesh here. Which you can fit loads in that really stretches out and it’s a firm mesh as well so it’s going to hold things firmly in place i don’t tend to put a massive amount in there because i like to keep my weight closer to my back but it’s actually really good for holding waterproof or extra base layers that you. Might be using during the day stuff that down there and it holds it in their lovely and secure on top of those two main compartments we’ve got these mesh pockets on the side which also hold a lot of stuff very stretchy and pretty. Secure I’ll generally use those side pockets for stuffing food and stuffing rubbish because even though I’ve got terrible flexibility i can reach into those pockets quite nicely so coming onto the front, and we’ve got two really great water pouches here it really surprises me how many ultra bags don’t. Seem to have big enough pouches built in. For hard water bottles and maybe because they want to offer flexibility so that people can attach themselves but as you think this is a great weight saving thing to be able to build them into the bag that ultimates are it shouldn’t have done so as you can see — water pool. Tools fit there really nicely there’s also the option on this right-hand one if you don’t want to. Carry two water bottles this zips back up again and there’s actually a really nice secure pocket that you could maybe put bars you could put all kinds of stuff down in there it’s actually a really brilliant phone holder you can put your phone down into their sip it back up and that’s super secure. But i actually find that’s one of the major downsides of its bad for me is that I’m going to be running around with two bottles most of the time and there’s nowhere for me to put my phone now I’m not expecting to be on the phone the whole time but it’d be really good to have access to music and stuff like that if i do want to listen to music currently there’s nowhere else. On the front of the bag for me to put it. There’s this outside stretchy pocket just outside where the water bottle is but actually getting your phone into it. It’s pretty much a no-go really the best. Place for you to put your phone is there’s a smaller zip pocket on the side of the bag then it can go in nice and. Securely there’s also one of these clip leaves to put your keys onto you know I’ve ever used one of these so the annoying thing about it is that it’s going to be too far away for you to reach when you’ve got your bag on so coming back to the front you’ve also got two smaller pouches below the water bottles so if i just take these out so you can get a better look so on the left. Hand side we’ve got a zip and on the. Right-hand side we’ve got a velcro strap these are actually bigger than they look quite often i use them to dump keys and just have stuff that i want readily available, but they’re actually stretch out so hold a couple of bars maybe or you know something slightly more sizable approach they just not that phone but you can see i can fit two full clif bars. Into each one of these pockets obviously. One of the most important things about the bag is how comfortable it is and i get on really well with this and i think. That could partly be because of the nature of these shoulder straps it’s actually one bit of fabric runs straight. From the base of the bag over the. Shoulders and down the front you can see it completely wraps around which makes it really comfortable all the way around and especially now I’ve taking. That back bit of padding out it just molds into your body really nicely so one thing that it’s most commonly criticized for is that it has two chest straps but no waist strap and a lot of people will say that that creates a bit too much side-to-side bouncing when they’re running i can definitely see that point but i don’t really experience it too badly myself and i think that’s partly because i found a configuration that really works for me on the front here i tend to pack. A lot of the weight in the bag place for my body to avoid bouncing if i do experience any bouncing i tend to try and adjust my running to be a little normal glider which i guess i see is a win-win situation i kind of want to be a little bit more glide ii so the chest straps themselves are actually really nicely adjustable they’re set into these sliders here which you can move them up and down so i found best. For security for me is to have one right. At the top and then slide the bottom one right down to the bottom and that kind. Of clips me in nicely either side of the rib cage by far my biggest issue with this bag is full of my decision to take polls to the mds oh now handily enough. There’s actually some really nice. Elastic straps on the back that hold them nicely in place you can put them down here there’s a clippable elastic. Bungee that you can wrap them around and have them nice and secure on the back of. The pack like that but i know having. Poles on the back of the bag i will never use them so really i need to have. Then on the front straps but unfortunately on the front straps there’s nothing there that’s made to hold the poles so I’ve had to try and budge something to make it work for me now unfortunately i haven’t made life easy for my selves and I’ve got poles that fold into four sections which means. That both the handle and the pointer at the bottom which means that when it’s. Going down this way there’s nothing really to hold on to the top of the pole so my first idea was to put a hook at. That i tied on to one of these things here and i took this string on the top. And then i tied it to the side that worked it was actually quite comfortable. But it was just so fiddly I’m hooking this and hooking it back on again i probably was never going to use my poles because it was too fiddly so then. I tried other things i tried to pass them on to the front which is a terrible idea don’t try that it was awful and i also tried to fasten it down here somewhere which again didn’t work so my final winning solution simply uses two pieces of elastic one of which just ties. Straight around the strap and around the water bottle here and one which fixes on. To the bottom buckle over here and that one has a sliding clip on it so all we. Do is we take the end of the poles and put it through the bottom bit of elastic we tie that site then put the end over the spike which. Then holds that in position and stops it falling down then the top you just feed. Through that top bit of elastic which. Holds it nice and securely in place so that’s nicely out the way and more. Importantly it’s a really light solution and i know it’s going to be simple enough for me to deploy and actually use the poles when i need to use them so that is the ultimate direction fast pack 20 is a massive winner for me really recommend it if you are doing a multi-day ultra or if you just do a lot of running weekend so check it out.
