Hey can I help you fit a harness today? Yeah. That would be awesome. Alright lets get down to business, It’s important that you have a harness that fits well Not only so that it’s comfortable while you’re wearing it around the crag, but so that its comfortable when you fall in it and so that stays on because a harness is what protects you in the event of a fall If, you have a poorly fitting harness.
There is a small possibility that you could slip out of it or that it will be very uncomfortable in the event of a fall. We carry a variety of brands and models of harnesses here at Next, Adventure It’s important that you get a good fit with any harness, and the process of fitting a climbing harness is going to be fairly similar across brands and models.
You’ll want to start by having a sales associate from our climbing department, help you select what they think is going to be. The right sized harness You may have to try on a few in order to get the right fit. You’ll start by stepping into the left and right leg loops and then pull up the harness by the waist belt, like a pair of pants Next tighten the waist belt above your hips Though, every harness buckles differently, the most common type of system, it, the two plate, auto-locking system, The, main piece of webbing- must be threaded from below through both plates and then back down through the larger one on the bottom.
You’ll want to get the harness as tight as you comfortably can It’s important that the hip belt sit above the hip bone and not on or below them. You’ll also want to try to keep the belay loop and the top hard-point centered above the waist If. The harness has adjustable leg loops you’ll want to tighten them as well Again as tight as they can comfortably be Check that there are no twists in the leg loops and that everything is oriented properly As.
Well, as that, the two rear straps are connected to the hip belt of the harness Next you’ll want to test the harness by hanging in it. You, do this for two reasons: One to get a feel for how the harness feels when actually going to be in it when it matters most, when your hanging after a fall or working on a route And, two to make sure that the harness isn’t too big You want to make sure that you cant fit more than a fist in between your stomach and the harness If.
You can more than a fists width in between the stomach and the hip belt. It means that the harness is probably to big or needs to be tightened, more It’s important to have someone help you fit your harness and to make sure that you try it on before you buy it. Come stop by the store. Try on harnesses hang in them get a sense of how they really feel and how they really fit.
Thanks for watching As, always for more information check out our website, www nextadventure net or stop by the store to come, have a chat with us. We ll see you at the crag.
I’m Justin off I’m with Petzl, and this is the Adama harness like this ama harness it has a really broad range of uses. The main difference is that it has adjustable leg loops, which gives you a little bit more freedom to wear different layers for cold weather or warm weather, and it also gives you a little bit more freedom to get the waist belt in the leg loops, to align just right for their fit for gear loops to semi-rigid forward gear loops, a little bit larger for racking.
The lion’s share of your gear and some smaller rear gear loops that are gonna be low-profile to fit under a pack there’s an adjustable rise along with a drop seat in the back. It’s got a Dyneema nylon blend for the tie, end points which increases the durability. In addition, the the lower bridge tie end point has red fibers that show when the wear becomes too much and that’s an indicator that it’s time to retire, your harness has our endo frame technology, which were is where we split the load bearing nylon support structure on the inside into two to better support.
The climber in the waist belt area has a really broad range of uses.
– Hey guys!, I’m Miranda, with REI, and today we’re going to talk about how to put on and check the fit of a climbing, harness (upbeat music) – So. The first thing that you wanna’ do when you take your harness out of the bag is just make sure that there are no twists in the harness before you put it on On this harness. You see that you have the waist belt which goes around your waist and then the leg loops, which obviously go around your legs What we’re looking for is that there are no twists in any of the elastic or any of the front part of the harness The easiest way to do.
This is just to hold it in front of you so that the belay loop is facing away from you. And make sure there are no twists in the elastic on the back of the leg. Loops This looks pretty good Before you step into the harness, make sure all the buckles are loosened up. It just makes it easier to put it on On. This harness there’s only one double back buckle, but sometimes they’ll have up to four So two on the waist belt and then two on the leg loops as well.
There are two main ways that people will put on harnesses. One is just to set it on the ground and then step into it and pull it up. The other is just to put it on like pants, which is what I generally do You just step into it. The same way that you would the legs on your pants, One and two leg loops We want the waist belt on the harness to be over your hip bones.
This is just so that in case you were to flip upside down. You’re, not gonna’, fall out of the harness Once I have the leg loops up and the waist belt on the harness up over my hip bones: I’m gonna’ go ahead and tighten it down I’m just grabbing this strap that comes from one side of the padding and then pulling it in the opposite direction.
And then adjust the leg loops There we go So. Now that I have the harness on we’re. Gonna’ talk about fit The, most important thing for fit of a harness is ensuring that the waist belt fits you A good way to check this is by grabbing on to the gear loops and pulling down making sure it doesn’t go over your hip bones Or. You can take a flat hand and insert it under the waist belt of the harness, make a fist and make sure you can’t pull it out Ideally.
When you have the right harness the padding on the harness will be touching or slightly overlapping If. It’s totally maxed out. You don’t get a ton of adjustability and it’s probably a good idea to try a larger harness If. The harness is so loose that you have a significant amount of webbing showing with no padding it can uncomfortable as that webbing can cut into you, while you’re climbing Like this So again, once it’s tightened down and it’s the right size that padding will ideally be touching or overlapping like I.
Have it here Once the waist belt is on. We can go ahead and check the fit on the leg. Loops These leg loops are slide adjusters, but some leg loops will have a buckle. Just like I have up here on my harness Some leg loops will be just be fixed leg, loops, meaning that there’s no adjustment to them, but this one again has the slide.
Buckles I can slide these to tighten it and slide them back to loosen it up, As long as the leg loops fit, they don’t need to be super. Tight They should be snug, but not uncomfortable, I like to climb with my leg loops a little bit looser. But again that’s just up to personal preference. As far as sizes of harnesses go, you can get a general idea of what size you need by checking different brands and looking at their size, charts measuring your body and then choosing the size that corresponds.
Again all harnesses are going to fit differently. So it’s a good idea to be prepared to try on multiple different harnesses Now that I have this harness on. We want to go ahead and do our safety checks. So I mentioned this buckle up here before Ensuring that the webbing is doubled back What. That means is that we wanna’ make sure that the webbing runs through both of these metal loops and comes back in on it itself.
So you have metal showing on the side with the strap If. You forget to go through the bottom piece of metal on the buckle here, the harness can come undone when you weight it or you sit in it. Now that we have this closed. We’re just gonna’, take a look at it ensure that we have that piece of webbing showing here and tell ourselves it’s closed Now.
This harness only has one buckle, that’s double back, but some will have up to four or more Two on the leg loops and sometimes two on the waist belt of the harness You’ll wanna’ check this before you start climbing and also have your partner check their harness before they start. Climbing You can do this just by taking a look at it, ensuring that you have that webbing showing and tapping it and saying “closed” These are both closed because they’re adjustable at the buckle with the slide and I’m ready to climb Like backpacks, most climbing harnesses, are going to feel comfortable until you climb in them So.
It’s a good idea to hang in it for a little while until you purchase it to make sure that it fits you right. Most REIs will have the ability to do this, for you so come on down and talk to the experts. We’ll see you at the crag (upbeat music).
Hi I’m Tim without door gear exchange, climbing harness There’s a lot of options out there. Hopefully this will help narrow it down. For you a little bit One of the first things we’re going to talk about is, as you get a more expensive harness you’re, not necessarily getting a safer harness All harnesses have to meet U I A A safety standards, so they will protect you, whether you’re, taking a massive whip off your sport project or just doing some top roping in the gym.
With. That in mind, look at the more basic end of things. This is the Primrose from Black Diamond. This is the women’s version. The men’s version of the Momentum is also available. Most harnesses in this range are in that fifty to sixty dollar range. The way they save some money is they have this big piece of webbing that goes around the entire harness and you rely on the padding here for comfort, more expensive, harnesses, have more pieces of webbing or different methods of distributing your weight, so it’ll be a bit more comfortable if you’re hanging in it for an extended period of time.
Most of these harnesses have four gear loops, so, regardless of what type of climbing you’re doing, if you’re climbing trad, where you need a lot of gear, these will take care of you and get you out there. The next type of harness we have are going to be some good general all-around errs. This is the Ujamaa from petzl. The women’s version of the luniz available. Most of these harnesses are in the 70 to 90 dollar range, a lot of them. You get a choice of an adjustable or fixed leg loop.
This has adjustable leg loops with adds a little bit of extra weight, but gives you extra adjustability if you’re wearing different layers or I’m a skier in a runner at pretty big legs compared to my waist. This helps make a harness fit much better. Six leg loops will be lighter weight and tend to give you one less thing to worry about. Most of these harnesses will have ice clipper slots that, once you put a special carabiner in for carrying I stools or ice screws, if you’re an ice climber, definitely something to look for in your harness.
Otherwise, it’s a nice thing to have need an extra gear loop. You can put a carabiner in there, but really exclusive to the winter climber. These tend to have an extra piece of webbing that goes down through the bottom or something like that to help distribute your weight a little bit better and still have a fair amount of padding here up. Next, we have some of the more specialized harnesses. This is the zone from Black Diamond, really designed around sport, climbing very lightweight, very low profile, slightly smaller gear loops, with the assumption you’re just carrying quickdraws.
This is going to be really light, not the most comfortable thing to hang out in, but this actually will have three strips of webbing going through here, so really good weight distribution without needing a ton of bulk and padding. Some of these will have much larger gear root loops if their design around trad, climbing BD also makes a harness that has a bunch of ice clipper slot. So if you’re really dedicated winter climber, you can really customize your harness to what you need.
Most of these are in that hundred dollar and up range and tend to be tailored towards a very specific type of climbing. In the last step, we have the super special at our nas’s. These may be super lightweight harnesses with one gear leap on each side, for sport, climbing or something like the warden from camp designed around big wall climbing. This has a lot of stuff going on. It’s got a super wide waistband, so if you’re sitting in your harness for a while, hauling heavy loads, it’s going to be really comfortable has a ton of gear loops.
So, if you’re carrying all that extra stuff, you need on a big wall, you’ve got places to put it. You also have multiple tie in points. So if your aid climbing and have daisy chains and all kinds of other stuff to keep track of, you’ve got room for it. On the other side, there are some super lightweight harnesses out there that are designed to be as light as possible that are great for sport, climbing. If you going for those hard red points, those harnesses tend to be in that 120.
150 dollar range big decision. Most people need to make is whether or not you’d fixed or adjustable leg loops, and then, where your needs are, if you don’t have any special needs, as a climber, dealing with some of the more basic harnesses will definitely save you. Money moving up the line, you’ll get a little more comfort or, if you’ve, really specialized in a certain discipline. You’ll get some more features specific to that. You can find these and tons of other great harnesses on our website gear XCOM, thanks for watching.
This is jay. This is jane thanks to the movable hip padding and the adjustable leg loops. They are our perfect all-rounders for mountaineering, climbing and via varadas hi, I’m phil, I’m the product manager at elerate, the movable hip padding, is the unique feature of this harness. If I cannot completely close the harness, for example, because I’m between two sizes or I am wearing additional clothes in winter, then it is possible that the tie-in point or gear loops are not centered or that they are not symmetrically.
On my hips with a movable hip padding, I can move it along the webbing and make sure that the tie-in point is always central and the gear loops are always symmetrically. On my body, the 15 millimeters light block buckle on the leg loops, enable quick and easy leg loop adjustment to the size of your thigh, so that the harness always fits perfectly. They can also be released completely, which is useful when ski touring or mountaineering as it means it, is easy to put on the harness.
Even when you have your skis or your crampons on the flexible inserts on the leg, loops mean that you can adjust them perfectly to fit your thigh. Furthermore, they can help to compensate the movement of your thigh muscles, while climbing you can tie into the main tie-in loop or parallel to it. If you tie in parallel to the main tie-in loop, this can cause increased abrasion on the leg, loop or hip belt bridge. For this reason, we have reinforced his harness with high-strength dyneema fibers, which perfectly protect these parts from where, if you tie into the main tie-in loop, of course, wear can also occur.
We worked red indicator threads into the webbing, which appear when the main tie-in loop has so much wear that it is time to change the harness. The harness has four gear loops. The g loops at the front are reinforced to make it easier for you to attach quick draws. In addition, the two back gear loops are flexible so that they lie flat along the body and don’t rub if you are carrying a rucksack, there’s, also a small loop at the back to attach the chalk back.
Additionally, there are two slots on both the left and the right side between the gear loops to fix, ice clippers, jay and jane are the only fully bluesign certified harnesses on the market. Bluesign is the strictest environmental standard for textiles, which guarantees the most sustainable materials and production processes are utilized, jay and jane the perfect all-round harnesses and the most sustainable choice you can make when selecting your climbing gear, bye.
