Ice climbing boots are really heavy, which can make hiking and long journeys difficult, so you rarely wear them outside your home. You can rent shoes at a local sports store, but if you plan to go ice climbing at least once or twice a year, buying your own shoes is worth it. Ice climbing boots are great for climbing in the snow if you want to kill two birds with one stone.
Shoes and equipment should definitely fit your hobby, just remember that your shoes should be big enough, which means that your toes do not hit forward with each beat. To achieve this, I had to increase the size and use the insoles for a perfect fit.
As for the backpack – if you do multi-steps, you will probably need a small but roomy day backpack in which you can put all the necessary equipment.
The Gregory Women’s Maven 35 Backpack maintains a minimalist’s mindset to keep its weight down so you can cover miles on overnighters. Its Aerolon suspension system wraps hollowed out aluminum stays in a matrix ventilation system to keep the pack surprisingly supportive for such a light pack.
Aerolon also features 3D-molded EVA at the shoulder straps and waist belt for cushy comfort. There’s also a lumbar pad for extra support, and the entire system adjusts vertically and horizontally for a customized fit.
Hey, everybody, this is Jackie from the budget-minded traveler’s command I want to take a few minutes to show you today why I love my Gregory jade 50 backpacks so much and why I would recommend it for you as your go-to travel backpack but.
First of all, if you haven’t watched me how to choose the right travel backpack video I recommend that you watch that one so that you can understand what we’re getting into today I’m going to be talking about the three c’s comfort capacity and convenience alright allow. Me to introduce you to my go-to travel backpack the Gregory jade 50 it’s a. Women’s size is small for my torso and the.
Number 50 is the pack capacity in liters why are these important three reasons. Number one the fact that it’s the size. Small is not only great for fitting my torso perfectly but it’s a bonus because. Check this out oh whoa thanks okay this. The backpack is about 20 to 21 inches that. Makes it small enough to carry on which is really important to me because I prefer to carry on whenever possible the.
The second reason the 50 is perfect for me is that it’s small enough so that it discourages me from over packing yet. It’s still big enough to fit everything that I need and the third reason is that. It seems to be the perfect size for any length of trip that I take I can take it. For weeks or months, it always seems to be the perfect size for me and now we’ll talk about comfort look closely at them. The frame of this backpack it’s actually shaped against the curve of my back.
There’s lumbar support at the bottom and there’s shoulder support at the top and. The frame never actually touches my back. So when a backpack fits right all the. Weight should be right on your hips and this should be fastened just above your hip bone so once I get all the straps at. Just the right length I’m actually really comfortable and I actually hiked Machu Picchu with this backpack for three days straight and I didn’t have any problems with being sore I also packed like so keep that in mind all right on the convenience it’s. Important to look at the pockets straps zippers and extra flair that the backpack has so started at the top.
There’s one right across the top here which I like for two reasons on it. Makes a convenient spot to put things that I’ll need to access a lot like sunglasses passport wallet hotel keys. There’s even a strap on the inside here. For your keys so that they’ll keep them in a convenient spot and the second. Think I like about this specific zipper is that the zipper is actually tucked in pretty close to my body so that when I’m wearing it’s harder for a thief too. Get to and if you notice right here i.
Actually, keep a safety pin right there on that loop and that way I can safely. Pin the loop to the strap and it creates a lock on the zipper so I wouldn’t have to worry about people trying to get into it anyway alright moving on if you open. It up you’ll see that on the inside i. Don’t know if you could see this from there, but we’ll try there’s a pocket. Right against the back here, I don’t know if you can see it but it fits documents.
I always put my flight reservations and important things extra stash of money right there in that pocket because it’s almost hidden and the rest of it is just a big open space I’ve actually got a pillow stuffed in there right now to show you and then on the outside the. The first thing that you’ll notice is this big bulky pouch and what I love about. This is what I actually use it to put mine. Shoes in and you’ll see that I’ve got some shoes in it right here this is a.
Very versatile pouch for anything that’s. Bulky shaped or maybe muddy I put muddy shoes muddy clothes in here all the time. So that’s a great spot for any kind of. Shoes and then on the outside of this there’s a long vertical pouch and this. Is actually pretty big this is where I keep my flip-flops because it seems to be the perfect size pocket for a flat pair of flip-flops and then on each side there are these.
Adjustable pockets right here which you could also put shoes in or water bottles. There’s a velcro if you’re not going to use it and there’s also a strap right here that you could put around the top of a water bottle or the end of a shoe to hold it in there and that’s on both. Sides of this backpack there’s also on. The very bottom beside the mud there’re some straps here. You could put something long shaped in.
This so like when I take this backpacking in the summer camping that’s. Where I put my sleeping pad because it’s a long awkward shape and it doesn’t even then have to go into my backpack it just goes right on the bottom and the last. Think and probably the most important is. This side pocket right here this piece. Of magic allows me to be able to reach. At the bottom of my backpack without having to take everything out through the top every time when I need something that’s packed deep and I almost forgot.
Right here on the sides of the hip straps there’s two more little pockets that are perfect for chapstick they even fit a little point-and-shoot camera and anything that you need to keep convenient with you while you’re wearing your backpack those are great pockets for that and there’s one more see that I Didn’t talk about with this backpack and that’s cost and that’s another reason why I love this backpack I actually went.
To rei to get fitted for this backpack they had a blue one in the store and once I decided the best the backpack I really wanted I went to the rei outlet and I found this one which is even more perfect for me because my favorite color is red this backpack cost me a hundred. And four dollars on the rei outlet so I was able to save a lot of money that way.
So there you have it a complete introduction and review of my favorite backpack the Gregory jade 50 I hope. You’ve enjoyed this video if you have please give it a thumbs up and come on over to check out my blog and podcast at the budget-minded traveler’s comm for. Even greater travel tips have a great day you.

The BioSync suspension system not only prevents moisture build-up with its well-ventilated design but moves naturally with your body to prevent uncomfortable pressure points resulting from an overly rigid back panel and shoulder straps.
The top-access main compartment is roomy enough for storing extra layers, daily documents, and other larger items, with an internal zip security pocket for housing keys, cash, and other small necessities. Another innovative feature is the bungee-secured front pocket that expands to accommodate your bike helmet or rain jacket.
Ultimately, this lends the Maya 22 the versatility needed for conquering everything from downtown bike commutes to extended travel across widely varying climates.

AirContact Trail uses contoured shoulder straps with a mesh lining, a ventilation channel between the pack padding, breathable foam back pads, and anatomically-formed hip fins to make heavy loads comfortable to carry.
The SL Women’s Fit System has soft edges to the straps (which are shorter and narrower), smaller buckles, curved west belt wings, and shorter-length suspension system. Climbing mountains is hard enough without wearing mountaineering boots that feel like they’re made of lead. This warm alpine boot offers ultralight warmth and support to help you scale towering peaks in remarkably lightweight comfort.

Additionally, the Sula 28 is equipped with a multiplicity of pockets, compression straps, trekking pole attachments, and internal hydration sleeve so you can go anywhere and do anything with ease.
On average, women have shorter torsos than men; Deuter kept this in mind while designing the Women’s Futura Pro 38 SL Backpack for a precise fit specifically for women. Its AirComfort Sensic Pro wraps the sturdy steel frame in padded mesh for extreme comfort on rough trails, and the Active Comfort Fit system adjusts the shoulders and waist belt vertically and horizontally for a fit specific to your contours.
The Futura Pro also has a hydration-compatible sleeve and trusty hiking pole attachments that will get you through a weekend backpacking trip. Features like the top-loading construction make it easy to pack the Vario to the brim.
Ripstop nylon material shows that Deuter knows what kind of durability you need on your hikes. Control sweaty-back syndrome when you head out for that five-mile jaunt to the talus fields of Chaos Canyon with the Deuter’s custom Aircomfort system. This design creates a separation between you and the pack for optimal stability on long hikes and reduction of sweat.
Thinking the right pack can seem like a very overwhelming experience for a lot. Of reasons, there are so many packs in the market its kind of hard to narrow down which one is right for you I like. To look at three things when I’m picking it back first what’s my purpose I want. To make sure if I’m doing day hikes overnight trips I’m using it as a carry-on that it fits that specific reason then it needs to fit me and fit. My body to make sure that it’s dispersing all the weight properly and finally, I wanted to be as comfortable as it can be when I first moved to Alaska.
This was the pack that I picked up it was Deuter future pro 34 liter SL which. Sl on the Deuter brand is a pack line. That is designed specifically to fit a woman’s body daughter is a German based. The brand they’ve been in the backpacking industry for 110 years they have several. Lines of packs and what they pride. Themselves on is their air ventilation system their packs are equipped with. This lightweight mesh system. According to the company keeps you from.
Sweating it keeps your a cut your sweat down by about 25% now as I mentioned. It’s important for a pack to fit you properly and there are two main areas. Where that’s true. It’s important that your pack fit in. Your shoulders and in your waist because that’s where you’re going to be carrying the weight now this is the SL meaning. That it is designed specifically for women’s body so that’s a number of. Different features the waist belt is smaller than say a man’s pack too. Accommodate that women are oftentimes smaller you also have slimmer shoulder straps.
And they carry in a different way and then you have a smaller wound mostly. Have smaller torsos and so the s outfits. Petite torso one of the things that i. Found that I like pack opposed to a lot of packs is I find that it’s really easy to tighten it and. It’s also really easy to reduce it so. Say you’re layering you put on a coat and you need to loosen it a little bit you just kind of flip these back or you. Take off that jacket and you need to tighten it a little bit more it’s able to do that there are a number of. Different features in this pack pockets.
Galore which is what we always like to see on packs you’ve got this top pocket. Which is perfect for gear that you’re. Gonna want to access quite frequently then if you flip it open you actually. Have this SOS card which gives you important SOS survival advice which is. Kind of cool you also have this interior. Pocket on the lid which is designed to.
Keep your valuables safe so I often put things in here that I don’t maybe want to access for the entire trip so keys my. Wallet my id anything like that. Now speaking of keys on the top lid the. The pack actually does come with a key chain that you can hook your keys to however i. Find that it’s not something that I use very frequently which also pockets on. The side I can put the ear in there you got. These mesh pockets that hold water one. On either side and this side, it also has. That gear pocket now this is older. Model so it does have this front pocket.
Which is an available on some of the newer models however all the models. Have this bottom compartment. That they call the sleeping bag compartment now if you take that out you. Can see it’s a separate compartment but you can also unzip it and it gives you access to the rest so you can use it away there’s a number of attachments. That comes with Deuter packs you can get attachments to carry ice picks or. Trekking poles as well there’s as well.
These that you can attach carbines to. To carry other types of beer with you. Whether it’s your coffee mug or something on the top one thing that i. Tend to use this pack for is carry-on. And also it’s a great overnight pack if you’re staying in like a hut or a cabin. So I’ve assembled some gear to kind of give you an idea of how much this 34. Liter pack and pull so I do have it. Hydration bladder compatible so I Already have my 3-liter hydration bladder in there the hose goes through. The top out the back and then you can. Clip it with this velcro and you can.
Actually, remove it and clip it to either side whatever is more comfortable for you do we have that in there already. You’ve got our sleeping bag in the bottom we’re gonna throw in our thermos. Our jet boil. A pack of some extra layers you can see. It starts to get a little bit tight. And finally every tooth throw in but a. Day and that’s worth food so you can see. That is tight at 34 liters is all off. That but we do still have room in the bottom, so we have a number of options we could stuff more stuff under there, or we can unzip it, and we can make it one large compartment now we talked about.
Our lid without easy access exterior. Pocket this I tend to put things like a. Gps in a satellite communication device. And always twitter paper now of course. There would be other odds and ends that you would probably carry with you and there is still room in here you have. Some room in our side pockets as well definitely could put headlamps lighters. Things like that other snacks um but. It’s starting to get a little bit full but you could definitely it’s a great weekend bag now one of my favorite features of this pack is the rain cover.
So say it starts to sprinkle a little bit outside you just unzip the bottom. Pull out the rain cover that’s actually. Attached by a clip pull it. Over your pack, it fits perfectly. And you are ready to go sprinkle stop. It’s easy to take off one thing I really. Like is placement I like that it’s at. The very bottom and I also really like. That it has a clip say you’re doing a little bit of bushwhacking you’re crawling with your branches or things on a rough trail it just touches and rips. Off which it had happened before it’s. Still connected so it seems like you don’t quite use it this often than you. Just back it back in the big shot. And you are good to go now as i.
Mentioned I would say that this is the perfect pack for say a weekend trip if. You’re staying in a cabin if you’re staying in the hot it’s perfect for day trips where you need a little bit of extra space it’s not necessarily the. Perfect just day pack with friends. Because it is a little bit heavy at. Almost 4 pounds so you probably wouldn’t want to carry that if you didn’t need to however it was the very first pack that I owned and I used it exclusively for. About three years before picking up some.
Other packs some smaller packs and some bigger packs and now I find that I use this exclusively for day trip activity. So berry picking or fishing are the. Primary uses that I use it for but I do. Enjoy the Deuter brand I like the slim. Fit the style for women I think it fits me. Very well and I have other women friends that it fits as well and I would. Definitely, recommend and ain’t yours. Local store and trying it out. And see if it’s the right back for you.
Deuter tailored the women-specific SL suspension system on its ACT Trail 28 SL Backpack specifically for backcountry adventurers looking to carry heavy loads of gear comfortably. Stash a day’s worth of supplies inside, get to them quickly via the dual-zip front access when you need to, and then hit the trail in comfort with the breathable Airmesh-lined shoulder straps and back panel easing your load.

Stretchy zippered side pockets keep climbing shoes and water bottles tucked away but still within easy reach, and gear loops along the front of the pack let you easily lash on anything that can’t fit inside.
On the other side of the pack, you’ve got back panel entry for easy access that doesn’t require rooting around your pack from the top, letting you access important gear quickly when you need to. Compression straps help pull the load in closer and offer external storage for a waterproof shell or puffy, while a top haul loop makes it easy to lug up after you on all-time multi-pitch climbs.
Whether you’re bagging a new peak or embarking on your daily commute to work, the Gregory Sigma 28L Backpack has your back. It holds everything you need for your workday, including your 15in laptop, or snacks and extra layers for your hike. Internal organization pockets keep everything easy to access and the soft-touch liner in the top quick access pocket keeps your tablet or phone safe while you make your way to your destination.
The plush air mesh back panel with dual density foam keeps you comfortable on a full day of wear while the dual side compression straps center and balance your load for higher mobility up the trail. When the work day goes long or if you spend too much time on the summit reflective elements and a light loop add visibility for a safer journey home.
Springtime is still hosted to icy sections until they melt from summer’s heat, and then you have rocky terrain to climb until autumn covers those steep hills with snow. Instead of having a pair of boots for each season, go with a heavyweight, super warm boot for winter, and leave the rest of the seasons to the Scarpa Women’s Charmoz Mountaineering Boot.
Hi, it’s Peter again I’m here to talk. About a variety of different mountaineering boots that we use in the field, I’ll start over here on my right with the uninsulated single boot kind of. Rock climbing summer mountaineering oriented we’re going to see this boot on the Matterhorn and the Eiger in Europe.
And on the 13-day course and the cascades moving up in insulation is. Another single boot but this one is. Insulated we use this on all over them. The Cascades and on mount rainier in mid-summer and you’ll also see this on mont. Blanc in Europe next step up in. Installation is our double plastic boot even more insulated with the removable.
Liner you’re going to see this on the mount. Rainier and in the cascades for the bulk of the season early and late especially when it’s colder you’re going to see this on Mexican volcanoes and Ecuador this type of boot is a very versatile one. More step up in installation is a high-altitude double boot here a little bit more streamlined lighter weight package and an even further warmer liner.
Compared to this for higher altitude. Expeditions this is going to be really appropriate for Aconcagua and especially Denali trips finally on my left is the. 8,000-meter boot you’re going to see. This in Antarctica on mount Everest any. Other 8,000-meter peaks and a lot of people are starting to use boots like this on Denali expeditions as well for. Extra warmth.
Trail ready and street smart, the Deuter Women’s Airlite 14 SL Backpack will work well for your everyday needs and carry what you need to get out into the mountains over the weekend. Featuring Deuter’s SL Women’s fit system, the Airlite 14 SL’s shoulder straps are set more narrow than normal to accommodate more petite female frames, and they feature soft edges along the straps to eliminate pressure points and reduce the chance of chaffing. Realizing women’s hips are shaped differently then men’s, the AirLite 14 SL has a conical shape to better deliver a more anatomic fit for women.
The pack itself features a twin-frame construction capable of comfortably carrying up to 13-pounds of gear. A detachable rain cover keeps your gear dry whether you’re walking home, or you get caught out on the trail in a storm. A hydration compatible design makes for quick on-trail hydration, while stretch side pockets stow water bottles. A single webbing hip belt adds to the comfort of the pack, and the 3D Airmesh lining further promotes the breathability of the pack.
Thule’s always been the go-to name for roof racks, hitch racks, and general cargo carrying, but it’s been getting into the technical pack game, and the early results haven’t been too shabby.
The new Stir Women’s Hiking Pack, for example, has an innovative top-access design that combines a cinch-down opening, top storm flap, and internal zip to keep all your gear locked down and organized. As impressively, the StormGuard design features a partial hideaway rain cover that teams up with the Stir’s rugged lined bottom to create a waterproof package that’s still usable when it’s covered up.
The Stir is both customizable and well designed due to a sliding back panel to fit different torso sizes and a removable hip belt and sternum strap to give it a more streamlined look for around-town use. A side zipper provides easy access to buried layers and pockets at the shoulder strap, front, side, and top supply convenient spots to stash your phone, water, rain shell, and snacks. Welcome back to Maaske back outdoor. Adventures today I’m up here in southern Appalachian outdoors and picking South Carolina to guess the Marty fields owner of. The shop and a good friend of mine so today we’re going to be finishing up our review on the Gregory salad 24-day packs. And what we’re going to do is go through some of the pros and cons of this pack I’ll tell you right up front I’m very few very little wrong with this pack I really liked it well, and we’ll start out.
By going through what I carry and why and get this done trumped any minute all. Right welcome back guys. Let’s talk about what I liked about this pack have you several taxes with. The Gregory for a day pack. I found that I can carry anything over. And above what I normally carry which is in excess and so in some people’s mind. When it comes with date hiking will. Start by showing you what I carry this.
The pack is ready to measure for 24 liters. Which I found to be pretty accurate. 24 liters is way bigger than you. Really need to day hike but it really allowed me to carry the essentials and what I mean by that is I’m kind of like. Self-preservation if I get out we get out in the backcountry I like to have things and be prepared for pretty much anything if I get stuck there I want to know that I can survive no matter what. Kind of conditions is there are so hey we’ll start by showing you this I carry my fire kit everywhere every time I go.
On they would consist of some fire-making materials here I carry a pin or any logbooks I might. Run across on the trail they’re lighter that’s actually a butane powered jet. Lighter very reliable. And might go to item ferrocerium rod. Found very few situations that I cannot. Start a fire with a ferrocerium run they’re a very effective chuckle. Atwood if you’re familiar with bush crafting type skills this is an excellent fire starting material it’s a just resin impregnated pine and what.
That one is and of course another blade I carry. Believe you don’t have a knife here you do at home so anyway that pretty much. Covers my fire starting kit and that’s. In the center all right next item I’ve. Got here very accessible some d all. Right here protein this is nothing more than some turkey jerky great source of. Protein and energy out there on the front, of course, the amount of food you. Carry is going to be dictated obviously by how far and how long you’re going to be gone water filter and bag I use a. 64-ounce Sawyer bag with my little mini filter excellent piece of equipment and. Stand by got to have a knife gotta have a good blade in the woods in my opinion.
And I never go now that this is a more companion robust made out of 1095. Carbon steel one of the essentials these. Knives are great they’re very inexpensive one of my favorites actually. And you guys know I’m talking about here. Gotta have toilet paper well as my cook. Pot this one happens to be a little Stanley this one actually came from. Walmart comes on a very good piece of. Equipment $14 and my little go-the stove. And watch a review on that stove on a youtube channel as well this has two. Nesting cups which are very thick hard plastic which is lightweight but. Virtually indestructible, so we really like these you can cook in this we make. Hot tea coffee you name it can be dusted and next. First aid kit this one happens to be.
Military in nature I have pretty much. Anything in here that short of combat. Lifesaver yet you know we can treat any basically any kind of cut up into stitches I can’t do stitches but any. Minor injuries we can pretty much cover with that’s a whole nother review in its own, so we will get into that to also state I can always carry my you. Know love hammock I can’t say that our. Camping that but I do have it just in. The case I find a little too big for them. Email to be staying multiple days on them. Trail, of course, my atlas straps for you know cordage always carry good cordage. With me and that’s for sure. Never know when you might need an extra. Flow in case it rains or whatnot and.
Along with that express ox I like to. Carry my little small Nikon binoculars with me I just like watching wildlife and of course, you never know when you might need to see something far away so these are great these are little ten power great for the trail and of course. Flashlights got them a little tack light here I’m. Not really sure what brand just says j5 tactical light I think I bought it online and one of the essentials to me. And the score is having a bushcraft type mindset I have my little grants poor’s. Brooks mini hatchet it’s absolutely one.
Of my favorite tools, I can pretty much do anything that I think I could do. With a knife with this tool for a. Hatchet this is razor sharp literally will shave you clean which is with a nice tool to be fine carving with it and. Split firewood with it just almost a. The necessity to me and of course I always. Carry a thousand-milliliter water bottle at minimal this is the Nalgene brand and. I could look at that’s it and you can. See on the bottom of the pack this pack has lasting points on the bottom for anything you might need and I just happen to carry by a little flex like a. The chair I need a place to fit anyway.
Talking about the pack itself this seems. Excessive I know to most people as far as day hiking but it is my mom said that. With this equipment, I can pretty much encounter anything I have the tools I need to build a shelter if I want you I have enough food I have fire making the material I have a place to sleep in the hammock if I need to so I go prepare. Water filter you know this is. How I do it this is no right or wrong way to hike it’s just my way of doing it. One thing I like about this pack is this. Gregory sack is very lightweight I’m not. Sure what the spec says or we should. Look at but the pack itself is very lightweight it’s very well-made you know 24 liters. Is big enough to carry all of this stuff. And if you’re not an inclusive type day. Hiker like I am then you could fit.
The clothing you can put anything you want to and this is how I do this offer. Comes with a mesh suspension system that. They call their free span it was very. Nice, I found that on the trail it kept. My back nice and cool even when you know. Going up strenuous steep sections of the trail I found it very nice the pack was. Very comfortable it fits well oh I’m 511. I weigh about 220 I’m kind of short. Waisted myself so this particular pack. Fit me very well I believe this one here. This is the men’s. Okay, I believe it’s just a one-size-fits-all in the day pack but I believe that this pack would fit the majority of you know your average guy say which that’s kind of what I am. So very nice bit I like how they have on. The waistband they have nice pockets here you can put a phone there if you. Choose anything small knife and on both.
Sides which is nice also I like the top pack that pouch. Up there you know I put some of the essentials in it a lot of times I like to carry stuff that I want to get to you really quickly like my knife you know fair socks you know toilet paper is just. A small essential up there and of course. The main pack has had tons of room in. It how obvious if you can expand that you know it works very well it also is. Equipped with a hydro bladder you can. Fit a pretty significant water bladder.
In here if you desire which is nice i. Particularly don’t carry them a lot of people do guys another thing I want to. Show you is here southern a select amount or, or he carries a variety of. These packs this is another Gregory also this is a sailboat as well this one’s an. A team leader it’s a little smaller in volume same features it doesn’t have them. Expanded waist belt just because it’s. Not as you’re not going to carry in here as much weight on this type. This one is the world.
This is also a solo 24 men’s packed. Different color schemes the only difference about that’s actually pretty cool anyway either I’d have to say that i. Would give that Gregory packing nine out of ten and I think yes grid dating for. The money I think retail here at the store this is a 115 so good value if you. Look at other different brands you’ll find that’s very comfortable and actually maybe a little bit less expensive than some of the other brands as well the same feature-packed item nothing. I want to mention too is versus some of.
The other packs that I’ve used as well this one has the five pouches that are. Actually big enough to fairly easily put. A thousand-milliliter water ball in each side without compromising you’re internal. Space so I found that to be very nice as well yeah anyway this has been andy with. Mossy back outdoor adventures here at southern Appalachian outdoors here picking South Carolina right on the main street can’t miss it combined steve Marty and everybody here, and they’ll do you right I promise. Thank you talk to you later. You.
The Gregory Maya 16L Backpack is the companion you want when you’re aiming for a fast-and-light summit bid. This pack features a flexible, supportive BioSync suspension system to provide airflow and keep the pack moving with you seamlessly. Side straps enable compression to ensure the contents won’t shift and knock you off balance as you scramble, and let you adjust the capacity when you don’t need the entirety of its available space.
The pack’s hydration tube management system keeps the drinking tube within easy reach, so you don’t have to divert your attention to take a drink. Dual waist belt pockets and side pockets make it easy to access the things that you need to get to in a hurry, like your camera or a snack.
Designed for keeping things moving on the trail, the fast packer 20L Backpack is a streamlined, lightweight way to carry the essentials. Ultimate Direction started as a running brand, and as such constructed this pack with features like strap pockets that leave space for your water bottle and phone, enabling you to take a sip or take a photo without dropping your pack.
The lightweight material is more durable than it feels and withstands the abrasive nature of the trail without weighing you down. You can access the main compartment through a vertical zipper or the roll-top, so your gear stays dry and easily accessible.
Hey there and welcome back to peace. Couch now as many of you aware I’m about to embark on the marathon disorder which. Is something I’ve been concentrating really heavily on for the last year or. More as well as doing lots of training. I’ve been doing so much research on them. Amount of kit going to take and I’ve been testing a lot of stuff so over the.
Next couple of weeks before I depart I thought I’d share some of those learnings with you and where better. A place to start than the backpack I’m going to take which I have decided on. The ultimate direction fast pack 20 now. This is super heavy at the moment because it’s fully weighted so I’ve been training with but I just can empty it out and show you why I like it so much so here it is and it’s naked form.
And this is what I like most about it is that it’s so minimal it’s basically an expanded running desk it weighs next to nothing and this is kind of one of the big deciding factors for me because obviously, I’m trying to cut down as much weight as possible 510. Grams okay now a great thing to compare. This is the official war bag which a. Lot of people will be using MDF and in. Contrast it’s got all kinds of stuff hanging off it and most importantly the.
Weight of it 900 grams that’s pretty. The huge difference so this is nearly half the weight of the wire back which is an incredible saving but I’ve also decided. To make an even bigger saving on it there’s not much you can cut off it like the like a wild bag you can get the diseases to that and kind of trim off some weight but here it’s so minimal anyway but certainly the most notable. Savings you can make it in the back there’s a bit of padding that you can remove, and they say that this can be. Used to sit on or even to you know used.
To cushion your hips when you’re lying down I found it pretty useless. I’ve actually having removed this form. The back I’ve actually found the pack more come — boo and with it out so condition this. That brings the weight of the pack down to give time a gram so I say 10 grams. Right there so although this fast pack is nearly half the weight of the wire bag actually fits way more in it and it’s down as a 20 liters bag but I think. You could probably push that out quite a lot partly because of the nature of this main compartment and how it seals its kind of like a dry bag has a velcro fastening that then rolls and then clips. In at the sides now I probably got about. 20 liters in there now but you can.
Basically just not roll it down as much and sitting maybe another five liters. Into that main compartment, it’s not only that you’ve also got this fat mesh here. Which you can fit loads in that really stretches out and it’s a firm mesh as well so it’s going to hold things firmly in place I don’t tend to put a massive amount in there because I like to keep my weight closer to my back but it’s actually really good for holding waterproof or extra base layers that you.
Might be using during the day stuff that down there and it holds it in their lovely and secure on top of those two main compartments we’ve got these mesh pockets on the side which also hold a lot of stuff very stretchy and pretty. Secure I’ll generally use those side pockets for stuffing food and stuffing rubbish because even though I’ve got terrible flexibility I can reach into those pockets quite nicely so coming onto the front, and we’ve got two really great water pouches here it really surprises me how many ultra bags don’t.
Seem to have big enough pouches built in. For hard water bottles and maybe because they want to offer flexibility so that people can attach themselves but as you think this is a great weight saving thing to be able to build them into the bag that ultimates are it shouldn’t have done so as you can see — water pool. Tools fit there really nicely there’s also the option on this right-hand one if you don’t want to.
Carry two water bottles this zips back up again and there’s actually a really nice secure pocket that you could maybe put bars you could put all kinds of stuff down in there it’s actually a really brilliant phone holder you can put your phone down into their sip it back up and that’s super secure. But I actually find that’s one of the major downsides of its bad for me is that I’m going to be running around with two bottles most of the time and there’s nowhere for me to put my phone now I’m not expecting to be on the phone the whole time but it’d be really good to have access to music and stuff like that if I do want to listen to music currently there’s nowhere else.
On the front of the bag for me to put it. There’s this outside stretchy pocket just outside where the water bottle is but actually getting your phone into it. It’s pretty much a no-go really the best. A place for you to put your phone is there’s a smaller zip pocket on the side of the bag then it can go in nice and. Securely there’s also one of this clip leaves to put your keys onto you know I’ve ever used one of these so the annoying thing about it is that it’s going to be too far away for you to reach when you’ve got your bag on so coming back to the front you’ve also got two smaller pouches below the water bottles so if I just take these out so you can get a better look so on the left. Hand side we’ve got zip and on the.
Right-hand side we’ve got a velcro strap these are actually bigger than they look quite often I use them to dump keys and just have stuff that I want readily available, but they’re actually stretch out to hold a couple of bars maybe or you know something slightly more sizable approach they just not that phone but you can see I can fit two full Clif bars. Into each one of these pockets obviously. One of the most important things about the bag is how comfortable it is and I get on really well with this and I think.
That could partly be because of the nature of these shoulder straps it’s actually one bit of fabric runs straight. From the base of the bag over them. Shoulders and down the front you can see it completely wraps around which makes it really comfortable all the way around and especially now I’ve taken.
That back bit of padding out it just molds into your body really nicely so one thing that it’s most commonly criticized for is that it has two chest straps but no waist strap and a lot of people will say that that creates a bit too much side-to-side bouncing when they’re running I can definitely see that point but I don’t really experience it too badly myself and I think that’s partly because I found a configuration that really works for me on the front here I tend to pack.
A lot of the weight in the bag place for my body to avoid bouncing if I do experience any bouncing I tend to try and adjust my running to be a little normal glider which I guess I see is a win-win situation I kind of want to be a little bit more glide ii so the chest straps themselves are actually really nicely adjustable they’re set into these sliders here which you can move them up and down so I found best.
For security for me is to have one right. At the top and then slide the bottom one right down to the bottom and that kind. Of clips me in nicely either side of the rib cage by far my biggest issue with this bag is full of my decision to take polls to the MDS oh now handily enough. There’s actually some really nice. Elastic straps on the back that hold them nicely in place you can put them down here there’s a clip-able elastic.
Bungee that you can wrap them around and have them nice and secure on the back of. The pack like that but I know having. Poles on the back of the bag I will never use them so really I need to have. Then on the front straps but unfortunately on the front straps there’s nothing there that’s made to hold the poles so I’ve had to try and budge something to make it work for me now, unfortunately, I haven’t made life easy for my selves and I’ve got poles that fold into four sections which means.
That both the handle and the pointer at the bottom which means that when it’s. Going down this way there’s nothing really to hold on to the top of the pole so my first idea was to put a hook at. That I tied on to one of these things here and I took this string on the top. And then I tied it to the side that worked it was actually quite comfortable. But it was just so fiddly
I’m hooking this and hooking it back on again I probably was never going to use my poles because it was too fiddly so then. I tried other things I tried to pass them on to the front which is a terrible idea don’t try that it was awful and I also tried to fasten it down here somewhere which again didn’t work so my final winning solution simply uses two pieces of elastic one of which just ties. Straight around the strap and around the water bottle here and one which fixes on.
To the bottom buckle over here and that one has a sliding clip on it so all we. Do is we take the end of the poles and put it through the bottom bit of elastic we tie that site then put the end over the spike which. Then holds that in position and stops it falling down then the top you just feed. Through that top bit of elastic which. Holds it nice and securely in place so that’s nicely out the way and more.
Importantly it’s a really light solution and i know it’s going to be simple enough for me to deploy and actually use the poles when I need to use them so that is the ultimate direction fast pack 20 is a massive winner for me really recommend it if you are doing a multi-day ultra or if you just do a lot of running weekend so check it out.
